Biggest mess ever

Barbara and I were trying to come up with something similar that James may have done at that age, but we came up empty. I was easy to remember some of the messes we (and I include James, Rachel and Russell in this we) had to clean up after John.

Way to go Rachel!

She certainly deserves the honor. Rachel has not only excelled in law school, but if you go back and visit her blog you can see that she also had fun and made it fun for others.

This first picture looks like it as taken in the Cultural Hall (gym) of the chapel in Salt Lake City. Pictured are Barbara's sister-in-law Claudia, niece Jaclyn, James, Barbara and Rachel. It should be noted that James came to Salt Lake City in the middle of a very bad snow storm from Idaho Falls on a bus.



The second picture was taken at the family dinner provided by the members of my late mother-in-laws ward (congregation). On the right is my mother Larae Murdock.













The last picture was taken in Raymond, Alberta, Canada at the grave site. Apparently it was very cold and windy. Pictured are Barbara and her sister Joan.

Voter Turnout

You know you're a politician when you are hoping for low voter turnout. Last year, law school SG Rep. race had 30 votes in total, or about a 2.6% voter turnout. Overall UT-wide turnout for SG elections was 8% last year. It follows then, that apathetic law students would be AT LEAST lower than 8%. Accordingly, I was running an 8-10% voter turnout strategy and decided that 75 was about the magic number I needed for victory. (75 would have been victorious up to an 11% turnout, at which point it would be a tie).

As fate would have it, through the help of friends and classmates, I EXACTLY met my goal of 75 votes.

Turns out my opponent had a get out the vote effort of his own, however, which led to the Law School having a 16% voter turnout. Needless to say, my 8-10% strategy was insufficient. That said, I cannot be too upset about the final result because he simply had a superior political machine.

I have attached a campaign flyer for you to get an idea of another one of mine. Maybe I will take the time to post the others in a later post. This flyer was my bathroom flyer.

My name is Russell and I'm running for...

You never realize how shameless you have to be in order to be a politician until you start asking for votes. I can only imagine what it is like to ask for money.

A couple of weeks ago I decided I would run for Student Government Law Representative after reading a newspaper article saying that there some positions that were not filled. Turned out Law Rep was not one of them. I have an opponent.

Voting begins tomorrow and I have been putting up a few campaign flyers to get my name out.

On Monday night, we had a debate. The issues varied from tuition hikes to the sporadic wireless internet to what our past experience with Student Government was (not much).

We’ll see how it goes.

What Would Barbara Do?

I had a nice conversation with a good friend of Barbara's who is in the ward. Barbara is the one compassionate service leaders in the ward and had some tasks to finish up before she took off Sunday to go to her mother's funeral. She ran some papers over to this friend who is named Monica and asked her to pass various sign up sheets during Relief Society last Sunday.

I had a message from Monica today saying that if I needed to swear or yell at her to give her a call. She called me when I got home from work and we had a good laugh. Apparently some of the women at church are going to bring meals by during Barbara's absence for me and John which I thought was thoughtful. Monica was a little worried that I would take it the wrong way, but I see it as a nice gesture.

Anyhow, Monica said she stood up in Relief Society yesterday and she said something to the effect that she isn't sure what Jesus would do in a particular situation, but she was sure what Barbara would do, so she went ahead and got some things organized. She said Barbara of course would have remembered to bring two pens for the sign-up sheets though.

Which kind of made me think of my later mother-in-law Beth Walker. Beth was exactly that sort of person also, she always seemed to know what to do or say in any given situation. During the almost 30 years I knew Beth, I was able to see that over and over again, she always did the right thing to help someone.

Beth of course had strong opinions about what was right or wrong, but she didn't let that stop her from helping someone when they needed it. Her home was always open to friends and family. She will be missed.

Beth Walker's Obituary

Beth Russell Walker February 03, 1916 ~ February 07, 2008 Our wonderful mother and grandmother, Beth Russell Walker, passed away on 7 February, 2008 and returned to the presence of her Heavenly Father to be reunited with her husband, J. Harris Walker. She lived an exemplary life and left behind a large posterity. The ninth of 11 children, Beth was born 3 February, 1916 in Ogden, Utah to Mary Ellen Criddle and William Francis Russell. Shortly thereafter, the family returned to Canada, where Beth lived most of the first five decades of her life. Her parents were among the early pioneers in Southern Alberta, where they settled in 1899. The Russells were a large and loving family who valued hard work and excellence in academics. At age 16, Beth met Harris Walker, who was her brother’s roommate. He later told her that, upon meeting her, he determined immediately that she was the girl he wanted to marry. They were married 17 September, 1937 in the Cardston Alberta Temple. Beth stood by Harris as he taught school, and worked to help support them as he studied at the University of Utah, and finally received his M.D. degree at McGill University in Montreal. Harris and Beth were married for 60 years, until he died in 1997. Beth was a stalwart and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Perhaps the greatest sacrifice she made was leaving home, family and friends in Alberta after 26 years of marriage and, at the age of 47, moving to a new home in Salt Lake City while Harris finished his residency training in plastic surgery. A faithful and devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Beth served in many leadership positions, including Counselor in two Relief Society presidencies and in the Mutual organization, Relief Society homemaking director, Relief Society and Mutual teacher, and music director in many auxiliaries. She attended the temple until her health would no longer permit. She instilled a love of the Savior in her children and closed every letter to them with, “Say your prayers.” She was an enthusiastic fan of the Tabernacle Choir and attended every Christmas concert until 2007, when she was too ill. Beth loved good music. She listened to the Metropolitan Opera broadcast each Saturday morning for decades, and was a supporter of the Utah Festival Opera and the Utah Opera, of which she scarcely ever missed a production. She sang in the ward choir for many years and wrote several programs for the choir to perform. She was the ward organist for over 20 years. Beth enjoyed crossword puzzles, word games, and was a true expert at anything involving language. She loved learning and reading. Until she was 90, she attended the Utah Shakespearean Festival every year. An avid sports fan, Beth closely followed all of the BYU teams, the Utah Jazz, Major League Baseball and any event in which her family members were involved. More than anything, Beth loved her family. She had a phenomenal memory and prided herself on remembering every grandchild and great-grandchild – both names and birthdays – to the very end of her life. She was a gracious hostess who, over the years, fed and housed hundreds of guests. In the last few weeks of her life, she instructed her daughters to make sure there were plenty of clean sheets, in case she needed a bed for someone. She worked tirelessly and enthusiastically to bring the family together. She was concerned with and kept in touch with her large extended family and was beloved by numerous nieces and nephews, who frequently stopped by to pay a visit, or sent cards and letters. At the age of 80, Mom bought a computer and learned to use it so that she could correspond via e-mail with all of her family, and research her genealogy on the Internet. Beth’s handmade quilts are treasured by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She delighted in giving quilts away to those she loved. One of her quilts was on display during a Conference weekend at the General Relief Society building. She was an enthusiastic genealogist who, beginning in the 1950s, spent long hours in front of the microfilm machines searching for ancestors on both the Russell and Walker lines. Her descendants are the beneficiaries of her intensive research, and she submitted thousands of names for temple work. Beth also cultivated flowers, including orchids, hibiscus and bougainvillea. She was an accomplished watercolorist and also created many lovely knitted, crocheted and needlepoint items. Although Beth did not have the opportunity to pursue a college education in her youth, she was proud that all of her children were college graduates, with numerous advanced and professional degrees, as well. She encouraged and delighted in her sons and grandchildren, nieces and nephews who served missions, and she wrote hundreds of missionary letters. Beth is survived by 4 sons and 3 daughters: James R. Walker (Sharon), Orem; Elder William R. Walker of the Second Quorum of the Seventy (Vicki), Sandy; Helen W. Jones (Walter), Salt Lake; David R. Walker (Claudia), Rexburg, Idaho; Barbara W. Murdock (David), Austin, Texas; Joan W. Lelis (Craig), Salt Lake; and T. Russell Walker (Aleese), Bountiful. She is also survived by a brother, Mac Russell, of Lethbridge, Alberta, and a sister, Ruth Cutler, of Penticton, British Columbia, plus 31 grandchildren (including Elder James C. Lelis, serving in the Oklahoma Tulsa Mission) and 44 great-grandchildren. She also leaves many beloved brothers- and sisters-in-law: Florence Russell, LaNola Russell, Hilda Russell, Freda Russell, Hattie Russell, Mary Russell, Art Cutler, Beth Zemp, Mary Fairbanks, Jane McMullin, Fay Walker, Ralph Walker, Reed & Marilyn Walker, Glen and WillaRae Walker, and Barbara Benson Walker. Beth was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters (Julia Asplund and Faun Peterson), and 6 brothers (Francis, Austin, Warren, Bill, Ken and Glenn Russell) Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, February 11 at Ensign First Ward chapel, 135 “A” Street, Salt Lake City. Friends may call from 9:30-10:30 A.M. at the ward; there will also be a viewing from 6:00–8:00 P.M. on Sunday, February 10 at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple. Burial will be at the Temple Hill Cemetery in Raymond, Alberta, Canada. Beth loved flowers, but if desired, contributions may be made to the Perpetual Education Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or the Utah Festival Opera in Logan.
